UHPC
w/ Jonah Zimet
What if the Morgan Library, by Renzo Piano (RPBW), had a solid concrete facade instead of a glass and steel one? This facade study challenges the initial design of the library by looking at the technology and support systems of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC). Utilizing a strong-back system, each panel would be “cast” with their support anchors, allowing them to hoist into position on site. The folded pattern also allows for light fixtures to be affixed between the existing building face and the concavity of the panel, illuminating the UHPC. The simple lighting effect creates two distinct elevations; during the day, it looks heavy and solid, while at night, the light reveals the gaps, making the facade look thin and as if floating above the ground.
